The rugged floating unit is waterproof and shockproof and built to withstand a variety of hostile environmental conditions. SPOT uses Globalstar's communications and GPS satellite networks to communicate independently of cell coverage worldwide. Modes include Alert 9-1-1, which contacts  emergency responders giving your exact location;  Ask for Help, which contacts family and friends; and Check In, which lets contacts know where you are and that you are okay. Track Progress mode sends pre-programmed messages, including your location and a link to Google Maps, allowing recipients to track your location.
